I attended the session on social media at CoreNet yesterday and it was interesting to see how different companies are applying this form of communication within their businesses. Here are a few things I learnt that were completely new for me:

  1. Social media doesn’t always have to be public – companies can create secure social networks using private enterprise tools such asYammer or Chatter
  2. Companies like Microsoft have specialists dedicated to thinking of new ways to create rich social experiences online – find out more atFuse Labs
  3. Jones Lang LaSalle is active in social media – for example onTwitterYouTubeLinkedInFacebook and blogs such as this one  or our Green Blog – I didn’t realize we used so many channels!
  4. Social media has huge potential to be used in disaster situations for crisis communications and as part of business continuity planning – very relevant to those of us in FM and PM
  5. We need to understand social media if we are going to understandGeneration C – the Content generation – and be able to relate to staff and customers who are social media users

I have now resolved to pilot an internal social networking forum as a way of connecting with my team of people across Asia Pacific!
